Our plan was to walk to the lookout at Sandfly Bay have a quick look, and come back. But when we got there, our plans changed again—this is something our traveling life taught us: we usually know where we’re going, but rarely when we'll get there. We looked down at the bay from the lookout, and saw one of the most beautiful beaches we’d ever seen: sand dunes as far as the eye could see that led straight to a white sanded beach with many black spots on it: sea lions. My husband and I looked at each other, and we knew we had to go down. The downhill was long and steep, we didn’t have our 3-year-old daughter’s carrier nor food (the two very things that usually ensure our survival) and the car was too far to go get them: we knew it was crazy, but we decided to do it anyway. That morning perfectly summarized our travel life–embrace the unexpected, trust that you’ll always find a way, and never be afraid of getting out of your comfort zone.

Each bag we receive is cleaned and sanitized before we begin the repair process. It is carefully evaluated for repairs. Our seamstress then uses spare parts and materials to mend the bag in our workspace in Pittsburgh. They are given a unique Day Owl serial number, a signifier that this bag is certified Day Owl Secondhand. By giving each bag individual care, we are able to keep these bags in circulation and out of the landfill.

The process is tailored to the needs of each bag. You may notice some of our mends are visible and colorful. The bag carries the story and memories of those who made the bag, and those who have used it- we honor these stories by making beautiful, bespoke repairs.
